WM Climate Change Leaflet

Climate change is now widely accepted as being caused, at least in part, by increased emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases (GHGs). These result from the activities of modern man. There is still much uncertainty but the effects in the West Midlands region are likely to include:

  • hotter, drier, longer summers;
  • warmer, wetter winters;
  • increased frequency, unpredictability and severity of extreme events including:
    • winter storms, floods, increasing risks of wind damage and soil erosion;
    • summer droughts with increased risks of forest or heathland fires.

A Growing Resource – Woodland & Forestry in the West Midlands

Woodland and Forestry makes an important contribution to the economy, quality of life and the environment of the west Midlands. Its value is estimated in excess of £718 million per year. This Study was commissioned by the Forestry Commission, Advantage West Midlands and the West Midlands Regional Assembly in 2003 and provided essential background to the development of the West Midlands Regional Forestry Framework.
